Inside the Tensions that Led to Floyd Shivambu’s Departure

Floyd Shivambu, once a towering figure in South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), recently made headlines by resigning from the party he co-founded alongside Julius Malema. This departure sparked a political stir, raising questions about the inner workings of the EFF and the dynamics of its leadership. According to reports by City Press, Shivambu’s exit wasn’t the result of a single conflict, but rather a culmination of ongoing tensions and grievances.

The Fallout Over the GNU Negotiation

At the heart of Shivambu’s frustrations was a fallout over a proposed Government of National Unity (GNU) deal. Shivambu, acting in his capacity as Deputy President of the EFF, had negotiated a deal that many within the party supported. However, Julius Malema, the EFF’s leader, unilaterally vetoed the deal, sidelining Shivambu’s efforts. This move not only undermined Shivambu’s role but also revealed deep-seated rifts within the party’s leadership, highlighting Malema’s autocratic style of decision-making.

A Breakdown in Trust Between Floyd Shivambu and Julius Malema

The deterioration of trust between Shivambu and Malema became evident. Shivambu increasingly felt that Malema was more concerned with serving his personal interests than upholding the principles of the party. This perception of self-serving leadership added to Shivambu’s disillusionment. Decisions within the EFF, according to sources, were often taken without Shivambu’s input, further isolating him from the party’s direction and leadership. Malema’s unilateral style of governance, often described as dictatorial, left Shivambu feeling marginalized and disempowered.

Frustration with Promotions

Shivambu also expressed dissatisfaction with the internal dynamics of the EFF, particularly the rapid promotion of newcomers over long-serving party members.

Figures like Carl Niehaus and Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who had only been with the EFF for a short time, were being elevated to prominent positions within the party. This lack of recognition for the contributions of loyal EFF members, many of whom had spent years building the party, further fueled Shivambu’s grievances.

Malema’s Attempt to Reconcile

Despite the growing tensions, Malema reportedly spent an entire night attempting to persuade Shivambu to reconsider his resignation. This effort indicates the significance of Shivambu’s departure from the EFF, as his presence had been instrumental in the party’s growth and success. However, it was not enough to mend the broken trust and discontent that had festered over time.

A Shift to the MK Party

Shivambu’s departure may be a precursor to a larger exodus of EFF members, many of whom share his frustrations.

The MK Party, an emerging political force, is poised to benefit from these defections. Disillusioned by Malema’s leadership style and the perceived lack of opportunity within the EFF, many members are expected to follow Shivambu to the MK Party. This shift could mark a significant reconfiguration of South Africa’s political landscape, as former EFF members seek a new political home that better aligns with their values and aspirations.

MK Party Floyd Shivambu

Floyd Shivambu’s resignation from the EFF was the result of a complex web of issues, ranging from leadership disputes to internal party politics. His departure signals not just personal dissatisfaction but also broader discontent within the party, which may lead to further political realignments in the near future.
