Sony’s Kraven the Hunter has officially wrapped up its theatrical run, cementing its place as one of the biggest financial disappointments in comic book movie history. Despite a reported production budget exceeding $150 million, the film failed to gain traction at the box office, bringing in just $59 million globally.
A Box Office Catastrophe
According to ComicBookMovie.com, the final tally for Kraven the Hunter ranks it among the lowest-grossing superhero films of all time. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular character Sergei Kravinoff, the movie delves into his tumultuous relationship with his father, Nikolai Kravinoff (played by Russell Crowe). The storyline follows Kraven’s quest for vengeance as he evolves into the world’s most formidable hunter—a path that, in the comics, ultimately leads him to become one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes.
Star-Studded Cast, But No Audience
Alongside Taylor-Johnson and Crowe, the film featured a talented ensemble, including Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, and Christopher Abbott. J.C. Chandor directed the film, with Richard Wenk, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway penning the script. However, even this notable lineup couldn’t save Kraven the Hunter from its commercial downfall.
A Blow to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
The film’s failure casts further doubt on the future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), which has struggled to find consistent success. Other SSU projects, such as Morbius and Madame Web, were also considered box office failures, but Kraven the Hunter has set a new low for the franchise—both Madame Web and Morbius managed to surpass $100 million in earnings, whereas Kraven fell far short.
The film’s poor performance looks even worse when compared to Venom: The Last Dance, released just months prior. The third instalment in the Venom franchise, starring Tom Hardy, managed to rake in a staggering $479 million despite having a similar production budget.
With Kraven the Hunter officially closing its box office run as a massive flop, Sony’s future plans for its Spider-Man Universe remain uncertain.
