The South African Dilemma: Navigating the Issue of Unmotivated Youth

Date:

As South Africa progresses into the 21st century, the issue of unmotivated youth is becoming increasingly prevalent. A recent column in The Washington Post addressed this issue from an American perspective, but it resonates strongly with South African families as well.

Understanding the Problem

The column, authored by Eric, detailed a concerned grandfather’s struggle with his unmotivated grandson. The 26-year-old grandson, despite holding a master’s degree, spends his nights engrossed in online gaming and his days sleeping. This lack of ambition and drive is an issue many South African parents and grandparents can relate to.

The South African Context

Unemployment among South African youth is a pressing issue. According to Statistics South Africa, the youth unemployment rate is a staggering 63.2%, the highest it’s been since 2008. This makes the issue of motivation and job-readiness among our youth even more crucial.

Addressing the Issue

As discussed in Eric’s column, enabling behaviours from family members can often exacerbate the situation. In the South African context, it becomes crucial to balance providing necessary support with encouraging independence and motivation.

One potential solution could involve equipping our youth with skills that are in demand in the job market. This could be achieved through vocational training or internships.

A Collective Effort

Addressing the issue of unmotivated youth is a collective effort. It requires input and action from all societal sectors – from parents and educators to employers and government. By acknowledging and addressing the issue, we can work towards a future where our youth are motivated, employable and ready to contribute positively to our country.
