While California is thousands of kilometres away, South African health experts say this incident has important implications for South African citizens, given the country’s busy public transport system and high population density in certain areas. Dr. Thabo Mjwara, an infectious disease specialist based in Johannesburg, noted that measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread rapidly in a crowded environment like a bus or a train.
“The California incident should serve as a reminder for South Africans to ensure that they and their children are up to date with their vaccinations,” he said. “Vaccinations are the most effective way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases like measles.”
Importance of Vaccination
Measles is a serious disease that can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (brain inflammation). However, it can be prevented with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, which is included in the South African government’s national immunisation schedule.
