Teenagers Garnacho and Mainoo make history in 2-1 win as Red Devils book a spot in Europa League
In a thrilling 2024 Emirates FA Cup Final, Manchester United stunned their city rivals Manchester City with a 2-1 victory at Wembley Stadium, claiming the prestigious trophy.

Manchester City entered the match as the clear favourites, having dominated the Premier League and secured the title with games to spare. Known for their formidable attack and solid defence, City seemed poised to add another trophy to their cabinet. However, Manchester United had other plans, showcasing resilience and tactical astuteness to overturn the odds.
United struck first when Alejandro Garnacho capitalized on a mix-up between Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega. Kobbie Mainoo then doubled United’s lead just before halftime, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side reeling.

In the second half, City pushed to find a way back into the game. Erling Haaland’s powerful strike rattled the crossbar, and Andre Onana made crucial saves to deny long-range efforts from Kyle Walker. Despite Onana’s heroics, he couldn’t keep out substitute Jeremy Doku’s strike in the 87th minute, setting up a tense finish.
As seven minutes of stoppage time were announced, City fans hoped for a dramatic equalizer. However, it was United fans who celebrated at the final whistle, as their team held firm to prevent their rivals from becoming the first side to secure back-to-back league and FA Cup doubles.
The 2024 FA Cup Final will be remembered for Manchester United’s tactical brilliance, moments of individual quality, and the indomitable spirit that saw them lift the coveted trophy in front of a jubilant sea of red supporters.
Manchester United‘s eighth-placed Premier League finish was their lowest final top-flight league position since 1990 and insufficient to qualify for European football, but today’s 2-1 win at Wembley over Premier League champions Manchester City has ensured passage into the Europa League as FA Cup winners.
