Maintaining Heart Health: 7 Things to Avoid After 8 PM

Date:

Evenings are often a time for relaxation, unwinding from the day’s stresses, and perhaps indulging in a bit of late-night snacking. However, according to cardiologist Dr VP Sharma, this is also the time when your heart begins its recovery work, and certain activities could be detrimental to this essential process.

Understanding Your Body’s Nighttime Rhythm

As the evening sets in, your body naturally begins to slow down. Blood pressure drops, heart rate stabilises, and repair work on cells and tissues commences. Disrupting this process, particularly after 8 PM, can lead to unnecessary strain on your heart and overall health.

7 Things to Avoid After 8 PM

Dr Sharma suggests seven key things to avoid doing after 8 PM to maintain heart health:

  1. Overeating: Having a large, heavy meal late at night can lead to indigestion and sleep disruptions.
  2. Strenuous Exercise: While regular exercise is essential for heart health, doing it late at night can overstimulate the body, making it harder to fall asleep.
  3. Screen Time: The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep.
  4. Alcohol: While a glass of wine may seem relaxing, excessive alcohol can disrupt sleep patterns and affect heart health.
  5. Late-night Work: Stress and anxiety from work can raise your blood pressure and heart rate, disrupting the body’s natural repair process.
  6. Smoking: Nicotine is a stimulant that can increase your heart rate and blood pressure.
  7. Caffeine: Consuming caffeine late in the day can interfere with sleep patterns, leading to increased heart rate and blood pressure.

By avoiding these seven activities after 8 PM, you can give your heart the rest it needs to remain healthy and strong. Remember, maintaining good heart health is a holistic endeavour that encompasses diet, exercise, and managing stress levels.

So, as we navigate the pressures of our modern world, let’s not forget that our hearts also need care during the quiet hours of the evening.
