However, a new synthetic opioid, Cychlorphine, is causing a stir in the international scene, and it’s a threat that we cannot afford to ignore.
What is Cychlorphine?
Cychlorphine is a synthetic opioid reportedly up to 10 times stronger than Fentanyl, a drug already known for its lethal potency. It has been linked to deaths across the United States, most notably a teenager in California. Hawaii has already issued a health alert to prepare for its arrival.
The drug is extremely potent and has a high risk of overdose, even in small amounts. Its effects are similar to other opioids, including pain relief, euphoria, and respiratory depression, which can lead to death.
Why Should South Africa Be Concerned?
In South Africa, we’ve seen the destructive effects of drug abuse firsthand. The rise of Nyaope, a concoction that includes HIV medication, detergents, and rat poison, has led to a significant increase in drug-related crimes and health issues, particularly among our youth.
The potential arrival of Cychlorphine on our shores is concerning. Given its potency and the ease with which it can be abused, it could contribute to an already escalating drug problem. With our healthcare system already stretched thin, we cannot afford another health crisis.
Prevention is Better than Cure
It is crucial that we stay ahead of this potential crisis. Awareness and education are our first lines of defence. Conversations about the dangers of drug abuse, specifically the risks associated with Cychlorphine, should be initiated in our homes, schools, and communities.
Our law enforcement agencies must also be prepared to deal with this potential threat. This includes training to identify and handle Cychlorphine, as well as increased vigilance at our borders to prevent the drug from entering the country.
As we continue to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the last thing we need is another health crisis. Let’s work together to keep Cychlorphine off our streets and out of our communities.
