Measles Outbreak Shuts Down Oxford Area High School: A Wake-up Call for South Africa?

Date:

In a recent international development, the Oxford Area High School in Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA, was forced to close its doors due to a confirmed case of measles within the school community. This news has sparked discussions about the state of health and vaccination in South African schools, emphasising the importance of immunisation and the potential risks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

The Outbreak and Its Implications

The school district announced the closure as a precautionary measure while the Chester County Health Department works on contacting anyone believed to have been exposed to the highly contagious disease. This situation serves as an important reminder of the potential dangers that can arise when vaccination rates drop.

Measles is a highly infectious disease that can cause severe health complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain), and even death. It can be prevented with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is administered in two doses: the first at 12 to 15 months of age and the second at 4 to 6 years of age.

South Africa’s Vaccination Stance

In South Africa, the Department of Health has been promoting immunisation as a key preventative measure against diseases like measles. In 2019, the country achieved a 75% coverage rate for the second dose of the MMR vaccine, falling short of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) target of 95% to prevent outbreaks. This incident serves as a wake-up call to strive towards achieving full coverage.

Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of vaccines in controlling the spread of diseases. As South Africa continues its vaccination drive against COVID-19, it’s crucial to remember the importance of maintaining routine immunisation schedules for diseases like measles to protect our communities and keep our schools safe.

The measles outbreak at the Oxford Area High School is a stark reminder of the importance of immunisation and the role it plays in protecting public health. South Africa, along with the rest of the world, must continue to push for higher vaccination rates to ensure the safety and health of all its citizens.
