The Resurgence of Measles: A Global Health Concern

Date:

Health authorities across the globe, including South Africa, are on high alert following the alarming resurgence of measles in the United States. The US had apparently eliminated measles by the year 2000, but the recent prevailing outbreaks signal a worrying decline in vaccination rates.

Why This Matters

Measles, a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious health complications and even death, was largely eradicated from most developed countries thanks to the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine. However, a growing anti-vaccination movement, fueled by misinformation and scepticism about vaccine safety, is threatening this progress.

While South Africa has a relatively high vaccination rate, the global interconnectedness means that diseases can quickly cross borders. As such, the ongoing measles outbreak in the US could potentially put South African citizens, particularly those who are unvaccinated, at risk.

A Global Health Emergency

New York state recently declared a disaster emergency due to the measles outbreak. South African health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are urging South Africans to ensure their vaccinations are up-to-date, especially if they plan to travel to affected areas. They are also advocating that parents ensure their children receive the MMR vaccine as per the recommended schedule.

The South African Context

In South Africa, immunisation is free of charge at all public health facilities and is given according to a set schedule. Children should receive the MMR vaccine at 12 months and then a booster dose at 18 months. Despite this, there is still a significant portion of the population, particularly in rural and impoverished areas, who are not vaccinated.

It’s crucial that we continue to spread awareness about the importance of vaccination in preventing diseases like measles. Not only does vaccination protect the individual, but it also contributes to herd immunity, protecting those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons.

As South Africans, let’s take this measles outbreak as a wake-up call to ensure we, and our loved ones, are protected against preventable diseases. Vaccination is a simple, effective way to keep our communities healthy.
