Leonardo Fibonacci, the famous Italian mathematician, was among the first to delve into this question. At first glance, this number might seem implausibly high. However, rabbits are indeed known for their exceptional fertility. Under optimal conditions, a female rabbit (doe) can produce a litter of up to 14 kits every month. Given that rabbits reach sexual maturity at around four months old, it’s easy to see how these numbers can quickly add up.
Reality Check
Of course, this is a theoretical scenario and the actual rabbit population growth in the wild is tempered by various factors. Predation, disease, scarcity of food, and environmental constraints all play a part in keeping their numbers in check.
While the rabbit reproduction problem offers a fascinating glimpse into the power of exponential growth, it also serves as a reminder of the delicate balance of nature.
