WhatsApp Plus: A Step Forward or a Step Backward for South African Users?

Date:

Popular messaging app WhatsApp is set to release a new version of its platform, dubbed ‘WhatsApp Plus’. This new offering has launched on the app’s Android beta and is set to roll out on iOS soon. While this seems like an exciting development, South African users may have a few qualms.

What is WhatsApp Plus?

WhatsApp Plus is a paid subscription service that the app is planning to launch soon. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has ambitious plans to expand and monetise its platforms in innovative ways. WhatsApp Plus is a step in this direction. However, it’s worth noting that this service is not to be confused with an earlier unofficial app of the same name, which was not endorsed by WhatsApp.

What does this mean for South African Users?

South Africa has one of the highest WhatsApp usage rates in the world. In fact, in a study conducted by Datareportal in 2021, it was found that a staggering 93% of South Africa’s internet users were on WhatsApp. This raises the question of how this new paid service will impact South African users.

While the specifics of the features that will be offered in WhatsApp Plus are still under wraps, the fact that it is a paid service might be a deterrent for many. Considering the economic conditions in South Africa, with many facing financial constraints, a paid version of a service that was previously free could be seen as a step backward.

On the other hand, if the paid version offers features that significantly enhance user experience, it could be seen as a worthwhile investment. It could also set a precedent for other tech companies to start offering premium services in South Africa.

However, the reception of WhatsApp Plus by South African users will largely depend on the price point and the value proposition that it offers. It will be interesting to see how this rollout pans out and the impact it will have on the South African digital landscape.
